Mama 5K Run in Zion

Enjoy a brisk jog with mother dearest as the Zion Park District Sports Arena hosts Mama’s 5K Run. The race begins and ends in front of the Zion Leisure Center. The first 200 participants that register will receive a race shirt and goodie bag. Raffle prizes, delicious eats and awards are presented following the contest.

Speaking of libations, treat mom out to the two-day brew annual Lake Zurich Craft Beer Fest in Paulus Park. Attendees will be able to sample more than 100-craft beers by prestigious local and regional breweries. The fest also features live music and plenty of eats for purchase. If the weather is on the chillier side, the Lake Zurich brew-ha-ha has added heated tents. The band lineup includes Fletcher Rockwell, Nerdvana, Louder Now and Lava Rock.

Independence Grove Native Plant Sale in Libertyville

Choose from a variety of native plants, shrubs and trees suited to almost any backyard for a two-day annual Native Plant Sale at Independence Grove in Libertyville. Native plants are beautiful, hardy, less expensive, easy to maintain and lucrative to the environment. These native flowering species provide an abundance of nectar and attract wildlife such as songbirds, chipmunks, butterflies and other beneficial insects. There will also be rain barrels and compost bins for sale on Saturday only. This event is a perfect date for you and mama bear for Mother’s Day weekend. All plant sales are final in this free admission event.

“Footloose” at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire

You can’t ban dancing!? “Footloose” takes place in Elmore City Oklahoma, which in American history is an actual town that forbade a good ole fashion jig. Not that the law ever took hold, but the 1984 film starring Kevin Bacon (featuring the smash hit song with the movie title by Kevin Loggins) was based on these events that took place in the Sooner State.  In 1998, the dancing machine movie hit center stage. The live theatre adaptation was nominated for four Tony Awards winning one in Best Choreography. Follow the story of a Chicago kid who can really cut a rug and see the impact he has on that little Oklahoma town. The show runs through June 2.

A Sentimental Journey at Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest

“Gonna make a sentimental journey, to renew old memories.” The Citadel Theatre presents “Sentimental Journey: A Musical Tale of Love and War.” The Doris Day-titled musical is a one-man show written and performed by Ross Leman. The tale follows the narrator’s parents love story as the two guardians fall in love during World War II. This world premiere feature showcases famous tunes from the era such as “We’ll Meet Again,” “Don’t Fence Me In” and the musical’s title song. The show runs through May 26.

CLC’s four choirs (the CLC Singers, Chamber Singers, Choir of Lake County and Gospel Choir) will present a varied program of choral music to celebrate spring. Due to the quiet nature of many songs, the choral program is not appropriate for children under the age of 3.

Highland Park HP150 Bus Tours

The southeastern city is turning the ripe old age of 150. If you think about it, Highland Park may be one of the mother’s of Lake County. The city is conducting three tours: an architecture tour, Hollywood in Highland Park Tour and an art tour.

Lake County Concert Association Presents Alliance Brass

This quintet is going to dazzle mom with their brass tax at Waukegan High School. They play tunes ranging from jazz, classical and more. The Alliance Brass Quintet is a Chicago-based band comprised of some of the most talented horn players in the country.

Guided Tours at Cuneo Mansion and Gardens in Vernon Hills

The lavish home initially owned by the Founder of the General Electric Company Sam Insull is designed with an Italianate style complemented by scenic gardens and landscaping. Not often do we see this, but Naval Station Great Lakes is open to the public for walking tours. The tour explores the architecture of the original brick structures, the changes that have occurred since the world wars and more. Make a stop at the National Museum of the American Sailor while you’re there. Plus, mom might want to see all of those brave hunks on the base.

Tempel Lipizzans Behind-The-Scenes in Old Mill Creek

If you hear an emphatic neigh in the distance, it is coming from the lips of the majestic Tempel Lipizzans in Old Mill Creek. Invite mom to a meet and greet inside the dancing stallions’ humble abode. On this behind-the-scenes tour, attendees will learn about the Lipizzan history, the methods of classical riding and receive a full tour of the farm. The tour will end in the Old Mill Creek farm’s arena with a daily training session and a Q&A with the trainers.
