Halloween for me drudges up all kinds of unpleasant memories I’d rather not revisit, but I can’t help reliving them every year when I see the kids trick or treating. My neighborhood as a kid was a vast wasteland when it came to cashing in on sweet treats, and I do think it scars me to this day.I grew up in Milwaukee, which has a well earned reputation for being a cheapskate’s paradise. I experienced it first hand, and heaven forbid anyone in my neighborhood would turn loose a few stray nickels once a year and pop for some halfway decent candy to give out to trick or treaters.
I wasn’t asking for much, but something with a brand name would have been nice. Candy corn and peanut butter kisses just didn’t cut it, nor did apples or religious tracts. I wanted some higher quality, and I had a difficult time hiding my extreme disappointment when I got yet another dud dropped into my bag. It’s a good thing I was wearing a mask, or I might have pitched a major fit.
Of the very few houses that did give out the “good candy”, it always came in a smaller version known as ‘fun size’. Really? One bite is more fun than a whole Hershey bar? Who’d a thunk it? I wonder who came up with this idea. As a kid I thought it was a rip off, but now I see the value.
According to this logic, nothing should be considered ‘small’ any longer. From now on, I have a ‘fun size’ balance in my checking account if anyone should ask. And I guess that $50 meal that didn’t fill me up on my last big date came with a ‘fun size’ lobster. The possibilities are endless!
