The weather is going to be perfect in this edition of things to do this weekend October 7-9.
Soon enough, we will hopefully be seeing the Chicago Cubs winning some playoff games next weekend.

- This festival has pumpkins stacked to the sky. Get into the spirit with your friend Jack while holding a lantern and journey to Highwood for the Great Pumpkin Festival. Once again, the festival will be jam packed with daily events, vendors galore, a carnival, live tunes, hay rides, pony rides, pumpkin carving, massive pumpkin displays, nightly pumpkin lightings, a parade, Superhero 5K/10K and so much more.
Friday-Sunday, October 7-9; Fri: 4-9 p.m., Sat: 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Sun: 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission: $2. Highwood’s City Park at Highwood City Hall, 17 Highwood Ave., Highwood.
- Sip cider, wine and beer while hearing some live entertainment and shopping for gourmet foods from Chicago Botanic Garden’s favorite vendors at the Fall Bulb Fest. Enjoy the best of the fall harvest at the Glencoe sanctuary. Your youngsters can navigate through the straw bale maze, witness an amazing gourd display and drop in for family crafts.
Friday-Sunday, October 7-9; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe.
- Experience the history of Naval Station Great Lakes through one of the Navy’s most private cemeteries. The tour starts at Great Lakes Naval Museum and will last one hour and 30 minutes. The tour will include a visit to the gravesite of Joseph Wallace Gregg, the first recruit to graduate from Naval Station Great Lakes in 1911. Saturday, October 8; 2-3:30 p.m. National Museum of the American Sailor, 610 Farragut Ave., Bldg. 42, Great Lakes.
- Tis the season to be spooked. Kick the Halloween season off with Ghost Stories and a Haunted Trail at the Volo Bog. When dusk comes, the crowd gathers in the picnic area just over the hill from Volo Bog to hear hair-raising tales. The narrator this year will be Ben Rosenfield – most known for his portrayal of Willie Thompson on HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire.’ Open to kids ages five and older and reservations are required. - Two legendary standup comedians are making their way to Genesee Theatre this weekend. On Friday, Carlos Mencia – known for his skit show on Comedy Central, ‘Mind of Mencia,’ will grace the Waukegan stage. Bill Maher, famous for 'Real Time with Bill Maher' and 'Politically Incorrect' will perform on the storied stage on Sunday night. To split up the two funny men, in the spirit of Halloween, an eight-piece, mummy dressed funk band called Here Come the Mummies will play grooves on Saturday. Local band Chicago Funk Mafia will open for the mummy band.
