After work last week, I drove over to the Des Plaines River trail, unloaded my bike from my car, and started off on one of the best known bike routes around.
It’s a straight shot up the river, but I was never bored because the terrain changes from a river scene (obviously) to an open prairie at different points.
And then there’s the wildlife. Now, I’m pretty sure I spent my entire childhood hoping that woodland creatures would leave the forest and want to be friends. I always wondered what Snow White had that I didn’t have. So imagine my surprise when a deer appeared on the trail and didn’t run away. She was so peaceful to be around, and I stood and watched her as she came about two feet from me and then casually walked around me. I was too nervous to take her picture when I was so close, because I didn’t want to scare her away. But here’s the moment right before all of my Disney dreams came true!
It’s easy to see why this path is so well traveled by so many people. Joggers, bikers, runners, walkers, and even Bambi can’t resist this trail. After about 8 miles, I turned around and rode back to my car, just to find that the trail looked new all over again from the opposite direction.
