The 12 Things At Christmas Lake County Gave To Me…

Let’s be honest people, a collection of drummers drumming, pipers piping, lords leaping, ladies dancing, maids milking, swans swimming, geese laying, golden rings, calling birds, french hens, turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree seem a little excessive.

I mean, just think of the mess and racket those persons, places and things would make. It is doubtful however that people would turn down five golden rings – sounds like you just made bank.

However, for the purpose of the holiday season, the banger and just good ole fashioned fun, let’s see what we can get on the 12 days of Christmas in the land of lakes. Holiday your way in the marquee season’s greetings land.

The first thing At Christmas Lake County Gave To Me; The longest wooden coaster drop in the land.

  • In 2015, Goliath, a coaster at Six Flags Great America was named the tallest, fastest and steepest drop on a wooden coaster by the Guinness Book of World Records. Since then the steepest and fastest title has been named for other coasters in the U.S. Goliath still retains its longest wooden coaster drop accolade by Guinness.

  • “Waukegan Express” Mural at Sheridan and Clayton in Waukegan (commemorating Ray Bradbury).
  • “The Waukegan Story” at 133 N. Genesee St. (honoring famous local residents)
  • “Unity Hall of Fame” on the side of Family Dollar, highlighting African American heritage at 610 S. Genesee St.
  • “Zira” on the side of Delia’s Day Care at 1208 Grand Ave. Everett Reynolds, the artist of this mural also created the “Dream Big” featured above.
  • “Ladies of the Lakes” sculptures on Sheridan Road.
  • “Waukegan Arts Revolution – A New Beginning” on the Waukegan Arts Council Building at 39 Jack Benny Dr.
  • “The Waukegan City of Progress Mural” on Grand Avenue
  • “Dream Big” mural on the side of Zuniga Automotive Service and Towing on Belvidere Road. The mural is to instill the confidence and empowerment of children of color and is also an ode to Ray Bradbury
  • Arts Park, on Wednesdays throughout the summer in various locations
  • Building mural at North Shore Printers Inc at 535 S. Sheridan Rd.
  • Ray Bradbury sculpture at the Ray Bradbury Experience Museum at the Waukegan Public Library
