Things To Do This Weekend Jan. 12-14

It may not feel like Winter after these last few days, but don’t be fooled, the cold weather is coming back and this weekend’s events are ‘cooler’ than ever.

There are oodles of fun events and activities happening this weekend around Lake County to check out, and for all others that may not be mentioned below, you can find the full list of them here.

Gurnee’s Frosty Fest

Head to Gurnee for an afternoon of family fun at the annual Frosty Fest hosted by Bittersweet Golf Club. The event includes ice sculpting, sledding and tubing, horse-drawn carriage rides, dog-sled demonstrations, s’mores and festive winter games. Activities may change based on weather, but it is still guaranteed to be a great time.

Saturday, Jan. 13; 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Free admission. Bittersweet Golf Club, 875 Almond Rd., Gurnee.

Vernon Hill’s Winter Fest

Bundle up and enjoy an afternoon of family fun at Vernon Hills Park District’s annual Winter Fest. The free admission, Century Park event features ice sculpting, dog sled demonstrations, horse and carriage rides, cookie decorating, snow painting, ice skating, sledding and more. Warm up next to the bonfire and roast a marshmallow or two while you are there because s’mores are phenomenal all year-round.

Saturday, Jan. 13; 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Free admission. Century Park, 1001 Lakeview Pkwy., Vernon Hills.

Winterfest at Volo Bog State Natural Area

Volo Bog’s Winterfest provides fun for the entire family to enjoy. The snow party thrown by the Friends of Volo Bog and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources features planned activities like winter-themed nature crafts, a snow sculpting contest, bog tours by cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or hiking on Illinois’s only quaking bog natural area. Volo Bog Natural Area festivities are also highlighted by live entertainment featuring singer and songwriter Will Kruger. This event will be held inside the Volo Bog Visitor Center and outdoors (weather permitting). Warm up with a frothy mug of hot cocoa complemented by delicious cookies.

Sunday, Jan. 14; noon-4 p.m. Donations appreciated. Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Bradenburg Rd., Ingleside.

The Tempel Lipizzans Behind-The-Scenes Tour

Witness the majestic Tempel Lipizzan horses as visitors take a special behind-the-scenes look at these steed’s unique training program. Attendees can explore the stallion’s stables and learn about the history of the Lipizzan, view the techniques of classical riding and tour the farm. The Old Mill Creek facility also hosts a meet and greet with the stallions. The tour ends with a viewing of a daily training session.

A veteran of film, television and stage, Jim Belushi knows a thing or two about comedy. He was a cast member on Saturday Night Live, part of Chicago’s famed Second City improv troupe and starred on ABC’s hit comedy According to Jim. Now the Chicago native and Blues Brother is bringing an improvised comedy sketch show to the stage, featuring a zany group of quick thinking comedians. The show is built around suggestions from the audience, then totally improvised. In some instances, audience members are brought on stage to take part in the shenanigans. Jim Belushi makes his way to Genesee Theatre in Waukegan with a zany improvised comedy sketch group to perform an abundance of hilarious hijinks. The renowned comedian and Chicago native is known for his various roles including “Saturday Night Live,” ”According to Jim,” ”The Blues Brothers” and many more hit movies and television shows.
