The Essence of Freedom Run is an annual event to raise funds that are needed for the brave men and women, both active duty and veterans, who defend our country in the armed forces. Choose from a 5K or 10K race and run through the streets of downtown Deerfield. Active duty military officers, police officers and firefighters run free of admission. The Deerfield challenge also will include a pancake breakfast.

Witness the majesty and beauty of the Swallowtail, Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Skipperling and as many as 500 other colorful butterflies and blooms at Chicago Botanic Garden. The Butterflies & Blooms exhibition highlights species that are native to Africa, Asia, North America and South America. The butterflies are housed in a 2,800-square-foot mesh enclosure on the Regenstein Learning Campus. Visitors can view the cocooned caterpillars make their transformation into butterflies through a window located inside the pupa emergence room. This exhibit runs through September 2.

The winner of six North American Band Association Awards, the prestigious Illinois Brass Band graces the stage at Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic Center. This free admission concert will be on the RLBCC outdoor stage (will move indoors if there is bad weather), so don’t forget a lawn chair or blanket. Concert-goers will hear some fantastic U.S. traditional tunes in honor of Memorial Day.

Like the Avengers, Zurko Promotions and Pop-Con join forces for the Grayslake Late Night Flea Market/County Pop Culture Con at the Lake County Fairgrounds and Event Center. Shoppers can peruse everything to antiques, collectibles, jewelry and porcelains to comics, action figures, video games, memorabilia, pop culture wares and so much more. Prior to the event, attendees are invited to explore Bess Bower Dunn Museum’s exhibit “The Art of Alex Ross” featuring the pieces of the DC and Marvel Comic universe artist. The pre-party runs from noon-3 p.m. and will be showcased at the Libertyville museum through September 9. Excelsior!
