"Chang chang changitty chang sha-bop. That's the way it should be." Nobody knows what that means, but the songs from "Grease" are sung by heart and adored by many. The musical originally made famous by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta kicks off the 2020 season for the Marriott Theatre. The romantic comedy follows a story about two high school love birds from opposite worlds. And let us tell you; opposites definitely attract. Enjoy a "Grease Lightning" production during the dog days of winter and dream of the ensuing "Summer Nights." Be sure to tell us more, tell us more.
The famous story by Hans Christian Andersen has remained relevant for nearly 200 years. The age-old tale of the bachelor Prince Wellington that travels high and far on a quest to find his princess life partner. The authenticity of princess status is in question, however, as this prince dated multiple suitors. The prince finally meets his match as the missy steps right to the palace doorstep. This princess has sleep apnea and feels peas through thick mattresses (which apparently is a princess test purposely given). To find out the plot's entirety, treat your little princesses and princes to this kid's theatre gem. The production is followed by a Q&A session with the cast.
"Brush Up Your Shakespeare" knowledge as the beloved "Kiss Me, Kate" hits the Marriott stage. When you combine the stories of Billy Shakes and the musical genius of Cole Porter, you know it's going to be magic. The musical was first released on Broadway in 1948 and won five Tony Awards in its first bout with the New York main stage. Just this year, it was nominated for four Tony's in the "Broadway Revival" category. The show follows a story a cast rehearsing their production of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Show." A love triangle goes awry with main characters Fred Graham, Lilli Vanessi, Lois Lane and Bill Calhoun, and somehow mob goons get involved due to Calhoun's gambling debts. Kander and Ebb are the music genius tandem wrote an array of show tunes for "Cabaret," "Funny Lady," "New York, New York," "Chicago" and many more, including, of course, "And the World Goes 'Round.'" The two gentlemen have shelved numerous Tony Awards. This production showcases a revue of the two taking the musical's title from a song they wrote for Liza Minnelli in "New York, New York."
Who would've thought an elephant and an oinker would be best buddies. Gerald the Elephant and Piggie the pig are the closest of pals. However, Gerald has this sinking feeling that their friendship could be ruined. Then, enter the three singing squirrels. Anything is possible when "the Squirrelles" get into the mix. This kiddie play is the perfect introduction to musical theatre for the whippersnappers. Stick around for the Q&A session following the production.
"Take it slow and Daddy-O." The story between the Maria and the two gangs is an innovative production and a catalyst to so many current Broadway acts. The culture, the choreography, the storytelling, "West Side Story" broke barriers and contributes so much in present-day musical theatre. The story is a modern-day (from the 1960s) set in New York's upper west side when a gang member falls in love with his rival clique's sister. The Broadway production has won several Tony Awards for its original cast and a slew of revivals including a nostalgic presentation staged in 2019. So are you a Jet or a Shark? Relive your favorite songs like "Somewhere," "America," "Cool," "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty," to name a few well-known jams.
"The hills are alive," at the Marriott Theatre. Let's just face it, that wiley Von Trapp family only breeds exceptional singers. The Lincolnshire theatre closes out their season with a widely beloved production based on the true story of the real Von Trapp family. The Austrian family hires Maria, a nun, and/or governess of the Von Trapp family home. Unfortunately, World War II occurs breaks out and our favorite family is caught in the middle of it during the height of their success. The Austrians request Captain Georg Von Trapp to join the Axis power, especially after his honorable exploits performed in WWI. However, the naval father (and widower) is not at all interested in fighting, plus he's fallen for his nanny. The show not only won a bunch of Tony Awards, but it also bagged a bundle of Academy Awards and Golden Globes for the cinematic version. This show is going to be as good as "raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens!"
"There's no place like home." Journey down the yellow brick road with your little young one, a lion, a tin man, a scarecrow and Dorothy. They're all going to see the magical, mystical Oz who's going to remedy all of their problems. But watch out for that wicked old west side witch and her flying monkey friends. Emerald City is your destination that will put your experience "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Meet and greet the four companions (Toto too), including the wicked ones for a Q&A session.
Join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the hip-hop Hippo and, of course, those hilarious, plotting penguins as they take the Lincolnshire stage in a musical adventure of a lifetime. “Madagascar – A Musical Adventure” makes its triumphant return to the Marriott Theatre. The gang attempts to escape from their Central Park Zoo displacement to return home to their own country – Madagascar. The show is based on the 2005 DreamWorks animated motion picture that originally starred Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Based on Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, “Consider Yourself” in attendance for the Marriott Theatre’s final show of the 2019 season. You may have to head over to Three Embers or Wright’s Bistro for some delectable “Food, Glorious Food,” but “I’d Do Anything” to be pals with the musical’s lead. Oliver is an orphan that works as an undertaker’s apprentice. The amiable child joins a gang of burglars led by Fagin to escape this dead-end job. Oliver is pinched by the authorities for a crime he is innocent of, but Mr. Brownlow, the victim of the crime, takes our British buddy in. Watch one of the most notable productions during the holiday season as Oliver discovers what family really means.
