Great news! After this dreadful week of weather, this weekend is shaping up to be something special (knock on wood.) We can't think of a better way to celebrate the thaw-out than to attend one of Lake County's many spectacular events and activities! In fact, you should continue here for a complete list them.

Earth Week is wrapping up this weekend and there are still events happening! Check them out along with the Top 10 Things To Do in April 2018, here.

I'll tread lightly here, but... fold up your winter coat and read on for the top things to do this weekend April 20 - 22.

1. Superhero Glow Run & Six Flags Opening Weekend

Coast into the weekend with the Superhero Glow Run 5K and the season opening of Six Flags Great America. To start the weekend festivities, runners will be covered in special UV powder, causing them to glow during this after-dark event through the park. Runners can have an extreme post-run cool down by riding world-class coasters following the race. Experience the thrills and chills of 15 great coasters, as well as other rides, attractions and Great America’s first day open to the public on Saturday. The Gurnee theme park will unveil the world’s largest looping coaster, aptly named Mardi Gras Hangover slated to open late spring 2018. The Superhero Glow Run is scheduled for Friday evening, while the park is open to the public Saturday and Sunday. Six Flags Great America’s regular season runs through Labor Day weekend.

Friday-Sunday, April 20-22; Fri. 6-11 p.m. Sat. 10:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sun. 10:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. Various Admission. Six Flags Great America. 1 Great America Pkwy., Gurnee.

2. Food Truck Frenzy

Fare aficionados will go on a Food Truck Frenzy at the Lake County Fairgrounds and Event Center. Whether you are considering hiring a food truck for your wedding, office, party at home or you just want to make your taste buds dance at this Grayslake family-friendly event. The food fight features fare trucks including Yum Dum Truck, Happy Lobster Truck, Toasty Cheese, Kate and Jan Hot Dogs, cupcakes for Courage, Bop Bar Korean Food and more. The proceedings of this event will go towards the prevention of child abuse.

Saturday, April 21; Noon – 5 p.m.  Admission $1. Lake County Fairgrounds & Event Center, 1060 E. Peterson Rd., Grayslake.

3. Loop The Lakes 5K and Family Kite Fly

Running enthusiasts will lace up for the Loop the Lakes 5K in Vernon Hills. The Century Park event will take competitors around Big Bear and Little Bear Lakes as runners can enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of the surrounding natural areas. The top finishers of the male and female races receive awards and all participants receive snacks post walk or run. Stick around after the race at the award winning Vernon Hills park for the Family Kite Fly. This free family-friendly event encourages attendees to bring their own kite or purchase from the Vernon Hills Park District for $6. Register online at active.com for the 5K. The Family Kite Fly begins immediately after the race.

Saturday, April 21; Run: 9 – 11 a.m. Kite Fly: 11 a.m. – 1p.m. Race Admission $25, Kite Fly free. Century Park, 1401 Indianwood Dr., Vernon Hills.

4. Unearth Science Festival

Spring into the season with Chicago Botanic Garden at the Unearth Science Festival for Earth Week. The Glencoe event features science activities  from soil science to surviving the zombie apocalypse. Attendees can also participate in drop-in programs, themed demonstrations, free programs and special events throughout the three day extravaganza. Registration is required for various events.

Friday-Sunday, April 20-22; Fri. 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Sat. & Sun. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Various admissions. Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe.

5. Model Train Day

Conduct an exciting weekend at the Model Train Day at Lambs Farm in Libertyville. Children of all ages can operate model trains provided by Valley Model Railroad. The locomotives will be located in the Magnolia Café & Bakery while other rail-related crafts and activities will occur in the Lambs Farm Visitors Center. Model Train admission is free; nominal fees for some crafts and activities apply. Start or end the day at the café to receive a discounted rate to the farmyard and other Lambs Farm attractions.

Saturday, April 21; 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Free admission. Lambs Farm, 14245 W. Rockland Rd., Libertyville.
