Things to do this Weekend March 11-13

The Orchid ShowSpring is officially here. Well maybe not officially, but it’s darn close.

To get the proper welcome to spring, continue here for the 2016 Guide: Spring has arrived in Lake County.

You never know though with the way the weather has changed – I know because my allergies have alerted me in the process – snow could come back. There are still a couple days left on the winter guide – so continue here to see that.

Here are the top things to do this weekend March 11-13 in Lake County.

  1. This is the last weekend to witness the array of colors displayed at the Orchid Show at Chicago Botanic Garden. The Orchid Show is the only one of its kind in the Chicago area. More than 12,000 brilliantly beautiful and unusual orchids from around the world will extend throughout the Regenstein Center, including lush presentations within the Greenhouses.
Friday – Sunday, March 11-13; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Adult Admission: $10, Senior & Child Admission $8. Members receive $2 off admission. Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe.
  1. Who doesn’t like waffles, pancakes or French toast doused in syrup? All throughout March, treat yourself to the sweet sap and sugar maples on a one-hour hike at Ryerson. In this hike, you will learn everything there is to know about how the maple trees supply that sticky substance that you cover your breakfast with. The family won’t be sappy about attending, but maple they’d be enticed.
Saturday – Sunday March 12-13; Noon – 2 p.m. Admission: $6. Ryerson Woods, 21950 N. Riverwoods Rd., Riverwoods.
  1. Looking for a reason to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day early. Long Grove has your solution as the town’s Historic Village will host their Ninth St. Patrick’s Day. Experience Long Grove’s Irish specialty shops along with live music, clothing and novelties around the square. The McNulty Irish Dancers will perform at Paddy’s on the Square on Saturday, March 12; 1:30 - 2 p.m.
Saturday, March 12. Long Grove Historic Village, 228 Robert Parker Coffin Rd., Long Grove.

  1. Punk Grandpa is showing at Three Brother’s Theatre. Grandpa who refuses to play by the rules inspires his 5 ¾ year-old granddaughter to live her life the same way. Through storytelling, music, home movies, dance, and photos this heartwarming play inspired by Laura’s family shows us inside the world of a little girl whose magical weekend with her fearless and hysterically funny Grandpa shaped and inspired her life.
Friday – Sunday, March 11-13; Three Brothers Theatre, 115 Genesee St., Waukegan.
  1. You better believe you’re going to hear some bagpipe tunes at the Lake Villa’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Luncheon. The parade route will begin at Palombi School and run for a half mile ending at the Lake Villa train station. Immediately following the outdoor festivities, there will be an Annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Luncheon at the Lake Villa VFW Hall.

Saturday, March 12; Noon. Downtown Lake Villa, between McKinley, Train Station and the Lake Villa VFW.
