Here are the top things to do this weekend December 6-8.
“Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?” Head to the Deerfield Winter Celebration and experience an evening of holiday festivities. The holiday celebration will be held both inside and outside of Deerfield’s Village Hall. The outdoor festivities are highlighted by a horse-drawn carriage ride, a live ice-sculpting show, a fire pit to roast chestnuts and much more. Winter party-goers can also escape the cooler temperatures and head inside where the southern Lake County village features a delightful holiday music program featuring Shepard Middle School’s Choirs, The Caroling Party and The Hurricane Saxophone Quartet. The village provides scrumptious holiday treats for purchase as well.

Friday, December 6; 5-9 p.m. Admission: Free., Deerfield Village Hall, 850 Waukegan Rd., Deerfield.
Sauté on over to Waukegan as the curtains open for Dancecenter North’s annual performance of “The Magic of the Nutcracker.” The Genesee Theatre production originally composed by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky is a holiday staple. Join Clara, the story’s protagonist, as she is given a Nutcracker by her godfather. When the children go to bed, Clara stays awake and finds herself in the middle of a battle between a slew of mice and toy soldiers. Continue the holiday merrymaking in Waukegan by visiting their ElfWauk art walk on Saturday. Take photos with Santa, visit the holiday bazaar loaded with local businesses, hear the sounds of live entertainment and cap off the night with the city’s official tree lighting at the Jack Benny Plaza beginning at 7 p.m.

Holiday festivities hit the streets of downtown Libertyville as their Dickens of a Holiday event gets underway. Santa Claus has parked his sleigh in the middle of Cook Park and is ready to spread holiday cheer throughout the streets and take pictures with all of the children before they then do a bit of gift shopping themselves. Over at the Holiday Shoppe located at Petranek’s Pharmacy, no adults are allowed in the shop as Santa’s elves will be assisting the kids in finding perfect gifts for their loved ones. Bob Cratchit and the family can warm up with a Victorian tea at St. Lawrence Episcopal Church (must call for reservations) or head inside to take a tour of the Ansel B. Cook Museum. The event also runs on Saturday, December 14.

It’s no Christmas miracle that Lake Zurich knows how to celebrate the holiday season. Head to their Miracle on Main Street event and experience an array of festivities and memories. Santa, Mrs. Claus and their trusty reindeer will be there to greet all of the good boys and girls. The village’s holiday party features live performances by Lake Zurich High School’s Bare Voices, the Academy of Performing Arts and a DJ. The southwest Lake County village fest is also highlighted by children’s crafts, sleigh rides, adult beverages, tasty eats, a candy cane hunt and the annual tree lighting. The Lake Zurich tree will be illuminated at 5 p.m.

Roosevelt uttered those words after the infamous Pearl Harbor attacks, and to this day, citizens remember those brave soldiers on the Hawaiian shipyard. Join the National Museum of the American Sailor and Naval Station Great Lakes this Saturday for a ceremony that commemorates the 78th anniversary of that moment in history. Bob Miller of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association will be emceeing this free admission tribute. Advanced registration is required.

The Sanfilippo Estate invites visitors for an unbelievable holiday experience featuring their mighty Sanfilippo Wurlitzer. Masterful organist, Dave Wickerman uses his talents to create a wonderful festive experience. To complement the sounds of holiday music, the Barrington estate is decked through the halls with elegant holiday decorations. This three-day event features a concert each day and is also highlighted by tours, libations, dinner, brunch, organ demonstrations and so much more. Saturday and Sunday events are sold out.
