Things to do this weekend January 23-25

Who would have thought that mid-30 degree weather would feel warm? With the weather at this temperature in Lake County, we are sure to get a little snow for some outdoor recreation like cross country skiing, downhill skiing, sledding, ice skating and many other winter activities.

Although there is some outdoorsy recreation, this weekend is mainly about the arts! Take a look what Lake County has in store for you this weekend January 23-25!

1.)    There’s always so much information about World War II. Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum continues to feature the most intriguing facts of World War I. Take a journey into the lives of Lake County soldiers and sailors and hear stories of local tales from the home front. Letters from veterans via audio station and a recreated trench are also featured at this event, plus much more! Friday October 18, 2014-Sunday May 31.

 

2.)    Up and coming country music duo Dan + Shay areDan & Shay headed to Genesee Theatre for their “Where it all Began,” Tour on Friday, January 23 at 8 pm. The duet released their debut album last year. For their efforts on their first album, the two received a 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards Vocal Duo of the Year nomination. Dan + Shay had their single ’19 You + Me,’ certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. james lumber

3.)    Lake Forest Symphony is performing their Hopes, Confessions and Testaments segments for two nights at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts in Grayslake; Saturday, January 24 at 8pm and Sunday, January 25 at 2pm. The concert will begin with a one-hour lecture from composer Jim Kendros. To follow, the Lake Forest Symphony will play the Magic Overture which is a piece asking the age old question of human existence. There will also be music from notable composers like Mozart, Rachmaninov, Ives and Schumann.

4.)     Ready for excitement? The Fifth Annual Frozen Zucchini Snowshoe adventure will be hosted at Smart Farm in Barrington Sunday, January 25th 10 am - 12 pm. This all ages events will include many prizes, goody bags and much more fun in the snow!

5.)    Lake County offers almost 130 trails for cross-country skiing. As the snow falls, you can go on an adventure to seek the wilderness, get a little exercise or just to explore the snow saturated trees. Great areas to cross country ski are Century Park in Vernon Hills, Adler Park in Libertyville, Half Day Forest Preserve in Vernon Hills, Independence Forest Preserve in Libertyville, Oak Spring Road Canoe Launch in Libertyville, Old School Forest Preserve in Libertyville, Rollins Savanna in Grayslake, Captain Daniel Wright Woods in Lincolnshire and much more!
