Isn’t that everyone’s dream; to succeed without actually doing anything? This Lincolnshire theatre shows you the way as you follow the rise of the show’s protagonist J. Pierrepont Finch. Finch is a window washer that gets a job at a major corporation. Finch climbs his way up the corporate ladder starting at mail room and gets promoted to chairman of the board in two weeks. This 1961 show won numerous awards including eight Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. Hollywood royalty such as Matthew Broderick, Robert Morse and Charles Nelson Reilly all appeared in its Broadway performances.
Butterflies are Free Three Brother’s Theatre Currently showing through September 24
In the words of Bart Simpson – ‘No one expects the Butterfly.’ This show set in the 1970s follows the story of Don Baker who has been blind since birth. Baker has been the hero of his mother’s children’s book, “Donny Dark.” With an overprotective mother, Don moves on and takes the next step of his life by moving into an apartment in Manhattan. All’s well that ends well right? Well nope, crazy shenanigans ensue as Don’s mother is introduced to Don’s hippy neighbor/aspiring actress Jill. This piece is full of laughs and cries that will leave you with wanting more.
Plaza Suite P.M&L Theatre Currently showing through September 15
Hilarity abounds in this portrait of three couples successively occupying a suite at the Plaza. A suburban couple take the suite while their house is being painted, and it turns out to be the one in which they honeymooned 23 (or was it 24?) years before. And was yesterday the anniversary, or is it today? This wry tale of marriage in tatters is followed by the exploits of a Hollywood producer who, after three marriages, is looking for fresh fields. He calls a childhood sweetheart, now a suburban housewife, for a little romantic diversion.
Lambs Farm’s Theater Presents the Lion King Gorton Community Center September 24-25
Nants ingonyama bagithi baba means ‘There comes the lion.’ Those are the first lines to movie and musical in the song ‘The Circle of Life.’ (I actually had to google that and it’s the authentic Zulu language; which is spoken by 23 percent of South Africa – and is the national language). Lambs Farm participants will be serving as actors, designers, decorators, choir members and more of this Disney favorite that is influenced by Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet.’ Follow the life and times of Simba – a young lion who will one day follow in his father’s (Mufasa) footsteps.
James & the Giant Peach James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts September 29-October 2
A magic peach, an imprisoned boy and insect friends; what more could you ask for in this incredible journey? Escape with James and his insect friends as they go on amazing adventures inside a magical peach. All your favorite characters are here-- James Henry Trotter, Aunt Sponge, Aunt Spiker, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Ladybug, Earthworm, Centipede and Spider. Roald Dahl's first and most widely celebrated book for young people comes hilariously to life in this delightful dramatization.
