I have always wanted to surf, never really could stay up for very long, but definitely a dream of mine. So, with today being International Surfing Day, I thought it was a good idea to revisit my dream and view my video from the past of me at Six Flags Great America trying to surf in Riptide Bay.
Even though I fell not once, not twice, but a lot, I still had a blast. The water comes at you fast and furious, not like your normal surfing on Lake Michigan or in California or Hawaii. From what I hear, once you get the hang of that it is pretty easy. The other side of the surf simulator is for wake boarding. Don't worry about falling the mat underneath is extremely soft and the water will just push you to the top of the simulator. One tip that I was told was to put your weight on your back foot. If you are planning to go and try this, remember the warmer that it is outside, the longer the line will be. Riptide Bay’s double-sided surf simulator. They say that you can surf five foot waves with speeds up to 30 mph. Body surfing is free and they offer surfing lessons for a nominal fee.
Who knew that right here in Lake County you could surf. Now, I will have to just take my skills out to Lake Michigan.
