Sister Act at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire

sisteractFor Valentine’s Day, I bought my wife some tickets to the Lincolnshire Marriott Theatre for this Actor’s Equity show Sister Act.

When we were both little, I think we both owned Sister Act on VHS, so as you can imagine, the experience was sort of a nostalgic thing for the both of us.

We did an early Saturday show, but the house was packed. If you’ve never been to Lincolnshire Marriott Resort, It seats kind of like a stadium (without the size of the stadium) and the stage is surrounded by a circle of seats. You get a real intimate feel with the cast as they face all directions when performing their craft.

It was to my surprise that the setting was much different than the movie from the 90s. The Sister Act movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith took place in San Francisco in the early 90s while the musical is set in the 70s. Everyone is wearing afros, platform shoes etc., etc.

Let’s get to the cast. Deloris Van Cartier is hilarious, has a great voice and she’s got star power. She’s sassy just like Whoopi Goldberg, but she takes it to the next level. Van Cartier is played by Stephanie Umoh.

When the chorus sings together, it is as good as any company performance together on Broadway. Their harmonies are superior and they’re just a lot of fun.

Jonathan Butler-Duplessis who plays the cop Eddie Souther is a stellar singer who looks like he does his role effortlessly.

You can tell between the cast, there is a lot of chemistry. Hollis Resnik plays a stupendous Sister ActMother Superior, while Lillian Castillo (as Mother Patrick) and Tiffany Tatreau (Mary Robert) were similar to those who played in the original movie.

My two favorite songs were Sunday Morning Fever and, 'It’s Good to be a Nun,' but that can’t be explained. You have to experience the musical for yourself.

Sister Act is showing up until April 3. This show isn’t just for theatre junkies; it’s an all ages type of show that everyone in the family will love. So what are you doing next weekend?
