Great news for the thrill-seekers, young and old, Six Flags Great America has reopened its doors. The Gurnee theme park is home to 17 coasters with three of the rides making history in the “Guinness Book of World Records.” Glide down the globe’s longest wooden coaster drop, Goliath, blast through park with Maxx Force’s record-breaking launch, sprinting from 0-78 mph in under two seconds, take a spin on the world’s largest looping ride, Mardi Gras Hangover. Later this season, joining the ranks at Hurricane Harbor Chicago is Tsunami Surge, the soon-to-be world’s tallest water coaster. Reservations for park access must be made in advance online at SixFlags.com/GreatAmerica. Six Flags Great America is open on select days through Labor Day weekend. Limited reservations are available this weekend.

Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2; Sat.: 10:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Sun.: 10:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. Admission: $39.99 per person. One-day Parking: $25. Six Flags Great America, 1 Great America Pkwy., Gurnee.

2. Camping at Illinois Beach State Park and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort

Lake County’s Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park in Zion and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo are now open for s’more summer fun. Gaze at beachfront views, relax on a boat or fish in the land of lakes. Experience endless opportunities for sand castles, biking, hiking, picnicking and swimming and at Illinois Beach State Park, that rests on the shores of Lake Michigan. Venture through five miles of trails for bikers and hikers and visit the North Point Marina for all of your boating endeavors. Rent stand up paddle boards, kayaks, canoes and pedal boats at the Volo camping resort. Not an outdoor adventurer? Fish Lake Beach is an ideal location for lodging when visiting Six Flags Great America for a day or two of thrills. Free wifi is available to campers at this Volo site. Call ahead to make a reservation at both Illinois Beach State Park and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort for a weekend of outside adventure.

3. Opening Weekend at Harbor Brewing Co. in Winthrop Harbor

Celebrate with Harbor Brewing Co. all weekend long as they toast to three years of beers in the Lakefront Craft Biergarten at North Point Marina. The Friday night offerings include their unique craft beers, a plethora of eats from visiting food trucks and live music from local Lake County band, The Rough Cut. The Lake County Libation Trail partner’s Saturday festivities include a delicious pig roast with live tunes by singer-songwriter Joey Halubur and Wisconsin’s The Unusual Suspects. Taste all the flavors created by the Winthrop Harbor makers at the Land of Lincoln’s first lakefront beer garden, complemented by sights of Lake Michigan.

4. Arbor Day in Lake Zurich

Take a moment to say thank you to the beauty that is Lake County this weekend by celebrating Arbor Day with Lake Zurich. The tree planting holiday begins Saturday morning at Kuechmann Arboretum with a sapling giveaway and an arbor sow ceremony by the Lake Zurich Village arborist and members of the Lake Zurich Tree Commission. Get your hands dirty and make the earth clean by helping pick up trash at one of the many Lake Zurich parks. The Lake County village encourages attendees to bring work gloves To volunteer for park clean-up, visit LakeZurich.org.
