Looking to explore the outdoors while enjoying the warmth and comfort of being inside? Head to the Northern Illinois Sports Show at the Lake County Fairgrounds and Event Center in Grayslake. The show is highlighted by more than 150 national and regional exhibitors offering deals on boats, RV’s, charters, travel and other outdoor accessories, over 100 free fishing and hunting seminar and more. Young anglers can experience the catch and release trout pond for kiddies to reel in their first fish. Experience the Hawg Trough where Grayslake visitors can witness various fishing techniques from angler experts. The great outdoors exhibition encourages attendees to enter contests for free giveaways. One of the grand prizes available is an eight-hour fishing guided trip for two on Green Lake in Wisconsin.

The Vernon Hills Park District has orchestrated an unforgettable, brisk season family fun party at its annual Winterfest at the Century Park Pavilion. The free admission event features horse drawn carriage rides, ice skating, sledding, s’mores by the fire, a demonstration by the Free Spirit Sled Dog Demo Team The park district’s initiative, Go Vernon Hills, is also hosting its Winterfest Walk that steps off at 1 p.m.

Visit the first ArtWauk of the year in downtown Waukegan. The monthly art festival showcases local sculptors, jewelers, painters, mixed-media and various other creators from numerous City of Progress art studios including Dandelion Gallery and Studio in Waukegan. Lezlie Lenz, a Dandelion Artist Alliance, has her “Peace Love Hope” exhibit opening on the art event Opening day of the “Peace Love Hope” art exhibition at Dandelion as part of ArtWauk. Lenz’s display uses powerful symbolism that is meant to inspire and bring peace, love and hope. The Belvidere Discount Mall’s Cinema Gallery features the photography exhibit by jonrev Projects, entitled “Dead Malls After Dark” and “Polaroid After Life.” ArtWauk mainstay galleries such as Kapheim Gallery, Estate of Mind and Side Car Studios welcome guests to explore their downtown Waukegan locations. Be sure to stop to wet your whistle, have a bite to eat and witness live entertainment at various restaurants and Lake County Libation Trail venues on Waukegan Main Street like Nightshade and Dark’s Pandemonium Brewing, La Casa de Samuel, Green Town Tavern, Oppidan Spirits, Win Win Restaurant & Bar and more.

The Alpine Biergarten at Buffalo Creek Brewing offers a great way to taste handcrafted brews outdoors in a cozy, intimate setting. The Historic Downtown Long Grove, Lake County Libation Trail partner offers six stocked firepits, patio and barrel table heat lamps, sheepskin seat covers, twinkle lighting and over two acres of winter wonderland to explore and stay socially distanced from others. The award-winning brewery is known for its 42K Belgian Strong Ale, Marrvelous German-Style Kölsch, and Xerxes Chocolate Bacon Stout. On Friday, the Long Grove brewpub releases its new double dry-hopped American Wheat called Project 36-08. The Alpine Biergarten is open in this setting through late March.

Wish the Lincolnshire brew house a happy sixth birthday as Lake County Libation Trail partner Half Day Brewing Company hosts its Warrior Paint release party. This adult beverage is a staple of Half Day Brewing Co.’s arsenal. The 10.75% alcohol by volume (ABV) coffee stout brews, created in partnership with local baristas from Newport Coffee House of Bannockburn, has been aged in Tattersall Rye Whiskey barrels. The flavors beer enthusiasts will taste are Mexican coffee beans, dark chocolate and caramel. Party goers can also satisfy their taste buds from the Lincolnshire brewhouse’s menu highlighted by award-winning chicken wings, burgers, wood-fired pizzas, salads, sandwiches and more. Suds aficionados are encouraged to try the Limited Release Warrior Point and the Double Coffee Warrior Paint on tap or take home a two-pack of the 16-ounce cans.
