Some Lake County classics are making their return this weekend, on top of a popular experience just north of the border!

There will be plenty of opportunities to take in the sights of vintage vehicles, sip and imbibe some cold craft beer and see the incredible intelligence of domesticated animals at work.

These are the things to do this weekend July 8-10, 2022.

1. Original Scoop Returns to Waukegan

The annual Original Scoop returns to downtown Waukegan this weekend and brings the genre-spanning car show and Genesee Street cruise. This automotive showcase displays vehicles from multiple decades when taillight flairs were normal, and every panel needed that extra touch of chrome. Scoop Waukegan features carnival games and a variety of food and beverages available for purchase from local eateries and drinkeries, including from Honey Bay’s BBQ and Lake County Libation Trail Partner Nightshade and Dark’s Pandemonium Brewing. In addition, vendors from Waukegan, Lake County and the surrounding area sell their merchandise. The car party also is highlighted by live music from 6-8 p.m. on both days of the gearhead festivities provided by Low-reen & Harpdog’s, Firehouse Blues playing Friday evening and Crossroads performing on Saturday evening.

Friday-Saturday, July 8-9; Fri.: 5-9 p.m. Sat.: noon-9 p.m. Admission: Free. Food, games and beverages will cost extra. Downtown Waukegan, Genesee and Water Streets., Waukegan.

2. Bristol Renaissance Fair Opens For The Season

The Bristol Renaissance Faire opens its gates for this weekend’s 35th season of operation. The attraction, just north of the Lake County border is full of immersive 16th Century games, rides, arts, crafts, food, music and one-of-a-kind encounters with a spectacular cast of characters. Sixteen open-air performance areas play host to jousting, swordfighters, minstrels and jesters, which are all included in the price of admission. Visitors can indulge in 130 different merchants selling various merchandise and souvenirs. Faire food staples like turkey legs, fried chicken, butterfly shrimp, burgers, hot dogs and other selections are available for purchase. Beverages and refreshments are available for purchase such as root beer, sarsaparilla, different juices, artisan soda creations and libations for attendees ages 21 and older. Free water stations are located throughout the grounds. Preferred parking near the front gate is $10 and general parking is $5, separate from admission. Visitors can secure tickets in advance at RenFair.com/Bristol. The “Olde” English fest runs on select days through Labor Day.

Saturday-Sunday, July 9-10; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Admission: $15-$30, free entry for children ages four and under. Parking: $5-$10. Food, souvenirs and beverages will cost extra. Bristol Renaissance Faire, 12550 120th Ave., Kenosha, WI.

3. Summer Spotlight Performance at The Tempel Lipizzans

The Tempel Lipizzans invites visitors to their Summer Spotlight performance honoring military veterans and those serving on active duty this Saturday evening. In addition to the standard five-part performance, an exclusive carriage-driving segment titled “Remembering Operation Cowboy” will be highlighted by a performance from singer-songwriter Lauren Hall. Lauren Hall was a contestant on NBC’s “The Voice” Season 17, where she was coached by renowned musicians Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton. The Old Mill Creek matinee show is broken into seven segments taking visitors through the Parade for Patriots, Tempel Farms history, their breeding and care program, the special edition carriage performance, the stallion and rider’s training regiment, how the trainers work with the majestic animals and the different “dance steps” horses execute. “The Quadrille: Ballet of the White Stallion” performance wraps up the demonstration. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets online (and learn more about these highly-trained and intelligent horses) at TempelFarms.com, but can be acquired at the door. The Tempel Lipizzans summer season runs on select days through September 4.

4. Libertyville Dog Days of Summer

Dog Days of Summer in Libertyville plays host to canines competing in the National Sportsmen’s Series of dock jumping. A specially designed water course showcases dogs from all skill classes aquatic diving and jumping for top honors in their respective divisions at the Libertyville Civic Center. The divisions include Professional, Semi-Pro, Contender and Amateur flights, with the DockDogs Big Air Finals taking place on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Big Air competition showcases long jump ability, and the canine tallying the furthest distance is crowned. Friday features practice and an open tryout for those curious if their dog has what it takes to make the leap. The first three heats will compete throughout the day after the open tryout. On Saturday, the canines continue the vault contest with three more heats, and the Extreme Vertical Competition closing the day’s trial. The vertical challenge tests the height of each pup’s jumping ability. The Sunday competition includes the heats of the Big Air flights, complemented by the Speed Retrieve All in One Finals. In the speed retrieve, the K9s compete for the fastest dog to pool jump, capture its toy and return to the start. The series finale spotlights the top performers of each heat, facing off for Big Air Finals titles. The three-day event also features an animal vendor fair, a parade, a sheriff K9 demonstration, a presentation by sports dog aficionado Dr. Elle Ford and a pet yoga session.

5. Harborpalooza 2022 at Harbor Brewing Co. Lakefront Biergarten

Harborpalooza returns to Lake County Libation Trail partner Harbor Brewing Company’s Lakefront Biergarten in Winthrop Harbor this weekend. The North Point Marina festival features an eclectic mix of musical acts. Six Speed Tranny will be opening the party on Friday night. Billy Garner, Five Acre Flight, Ryan Lindsey, The Unusual Suspects and 89 Mojo will keep the beats moving on Saturday. The Rough Cut, LJT & The Leftovers and Blues Family Robinson will be rocking out on Sunday. The Biergarten has a large selection of Harbor Brewing Co. craft beers and myriad libations on tap from other local Lake County suds factories. The Sweet Stop and JC’s BBQ will be serving sweet and savory options all weekend. Lawn seating and picnic tables are first-come, first-serve. The Lake Michigan shoreline Biergarten is open through late October.
