Explore art displays in downtown Waukegan. Get at look at the rich history of Mundelein. St. Patrick's Day Weekend is in full-swing in Wauconda. Visit the showcase from different artists in Libertyville. Reptiles and other four-legged creatures are out in Lake Forest. Lets take a look at the top five things to do this weekend March 18-20.

1. ArtWauk in Downtown Waukegan

”Art is never finished, only abandoned,” said Leornardo Da Vinci. ArtWauk, the monthly art festival, showcases local sculptors, jewelers, painters, mixed-media and various other creators from numerous City of Progress art studios. Dandelion Gallery and Studio’s Artist Alliance member Shelly Johnson has an opening day showcase event for the studio’s urban contemporary exhibition. The Belvidere Discount Mall’s Cinema Gallery features a photography exhibit by jonrev Projects with two new pieces revealed as part of his “Dead Malls” and “After Dark” projects. ArtWauk mainstay galleries such as Kapheim Gallery, Estate of Mind and Tofu Art welcome visitors to explore their downtown Waukegan locations.  Be sure to stop to wet your whistle, have a bite to eat and witness live entertainment at various restaurants and Lake County Libation Trail venues on Waukegan Main Street like Nightshade and Dark’s Pandemonium Brewing, Green Town Tavern, Oppidan Spirits and more.

2. Mundelein Heritage Museum Reopens

The Mundelein Heritage Museum reopens on Saturday after receiving a comprehensive facelift. The free admission experience provides visitors with new exhibits on early Mundelein, pioneers, a peek at one-room schools of Fremont Township education institutes, memorabilia from notable Mundelein businesses, military displays from both World Wars and a collection dedicated to Mundelein’s rich railroad history. The museum is open Wednesdays from 4-7 p.m., and Saturdays 1-4 p.m. Appointments for group tours at the Mundelein Historical Commission facility can be scheduled by calling 847-949-3200.

Saturday, March 19; 1-4 p.m. Free admission. Mundelein Heritage Museum, 601 E. Noel Dr., Mundelein.

3. North Side Irish Fest at Side Lot Brewery in Wauconda

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Weekend at North Side Irish Fest hosted by Lake County Libation Trail participant Side Lot Brewery in Wauconda. The Gaelic holiday is highlighted by live entertainment, drink specials, raffles, a giant beer pong tourney, an NCAA Men’s March Madness watch party and Irish staple cuisines like corned beef, fish and chips, stout lamb hand pies and more. On Saturday, test your endurance in the inaugural St. Patrick’s Weekend Beer Mile stepping off at 10 a.m. The 5,280 scamper is a 10-lap course where runners will sip a 12-ounce beer to drink on every fourth lap (drinking is not required). The Wauconda brew fest also features live performances from music acts, the Wichita Jacks, Gina Gonzalez and a dance group of traditional Irish dancers. St. Paddy’s partiers can purchase tickets, and make reservations by visiting SideLotBrewing.com.

4. Artist Member Exhibition at Adler Arts Center in Libertyville

Observe the Artist Member Exhibition at the Adler Arts Center in Libertyville. The gallery showcases pieces of over 30 artisans from the collective community of painters, sculptors, woodworkers, photographers and other creators. The featured artists work in several different mediums while exploring a range of themes. Adler Arts Center has set a goal that exhibitions include narratives of underrepresented cultures, viewpoints and artists. The showcase runs through March 31. The gallery pauses from March 21-26 for spring break.

Friday-Saturday, March 18-19; Fri.: 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat.: 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free. Adler Arts Center, 1700 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville.

5. Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest

”Puff the magic dragon” lived by a Great Lake. Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest is a living museum and wildlife habitat that is home to over 200 animals and 85 species including a bobcat, raptors, a sloth, an eagle, an assortment of venomous and non-venomous reptiles like komodo dragons crocodilians, snakes, turtles and tortoises and more. The Lake County animal sanctuary houses one of the largest public exhibits of rattlesnakes in North America, including four species that are native to Illinois. Engage on a hike and observe the natural as it is adjacent to Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve Trail and the historic Elawa Farm. The exhibits and programs are free of admission and will kindle a lifetime bond with nature. However, donations are appreciated.

Friday-Sunday, March 18-20; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free. Wildlife Discovery Center, 1401 Middlefork Dr., Lake Forest.
