With Memorial Day on the horizon, there is no shortage of fun to be had this weekend in Lake County

Chase a good wave on a hot day, Hurricane Harbor Chicago opens the gates this Saturday, May 28 for the Memorial Day weekend. Ride the Tsunami Surge, the world’s tallest water coaster that has a height of 86 feet. Drop down the Mega Wedgie, which has a height of 48 feet, to give your brain a twist. Surfs Hang ten on the Surf Rider. The unique splash course is the classic surfboard experience coasting on the water jets. The Gurnee fun zone features 25 different attractions inside the water park that will keep kids, adults and families alike entertained all day. Hurricane Harbor Chicago has a large selection of dining choices, including more restaurants located in Six Flags Great America. Tickets start at $30 for one day. The park is open on select days through Labor Day weekend.

Allow the mind to wander through an Austrian mountaintop meadow to the classic melodies of “The Sound of Music.” Witness the acting skills of a multi-generation cast at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire as they bring this classic to life on the 360-degree open stage. “The Sound of Music” was the final collaborative effort between Oscar Hammerstein II, who wrote the lyrics, and Richard Rodgers as the composer. The performance has lived on through the decades and people, both young and old, can recall at least one scene from the original movie. Tickets start at $52, and the Lincolnshire production runs on select days through June 5.

Take part in a celebration of nature that is a half century in the making with the Chicago Botanic Garden. “Flourish: The Garden at 50,” highlights the conservation efforts that the Glencoe sanctuary has made, keeps it thriving today and what the plans of the future involve. There will be a variety of activities that are family-friendly and educational. Participate in birthday trivia about the Chicago Botanic Garden, dance to the marching band and all-female mariachi group, walk in the “Art+History Tour,” go on a gold plant scavenger hunt and buy lunch or dessert at the Garden View Café. The garden festivities will feature art installations from local and international artists that will be on display. The birthday festivities are held during the standard business hours of the Garden this weekend. Tickets start at $15, and parking is not included. The exhibition runs on select days through September 25.

The Beer Garden at Independence Grove Forest Preserve has opened for the season and is a time for beer geeks to rejoice. There is a wide variety of craft beers, ciders & seltzers, non-alcoholic brews and wines available for purchase featuring makers from the Lake County Libation Trail. The Libertyville-located, Lake County Forest Preserve showcases drinks from hometown brewer Mickey Finn’s Brewery, Roaring Table Brewing Co. and Phase Three Brewing Co. of Lake Zurich, Zümbier Brewery of Waukegan, Light the Lamp Brewery and Glunz Family Winery of Grayslake, Ravinia Brewing Co. of Highland Park and Black Lung Brewing Co. of Round Lake Beach. Snacks, water and pop are available for purchase, too. The beer garden is free admission for Lake County residents with photo ID and will be open Friday through Sunday from 1-9 p.m. Non-residents are $12 per car on the weekends and holidays. The garden is also highlighted by taking a stroll with a libation in hand on the Des Plaines River Trail, sand volleyball courts and a fire pit. The summer concert series take place every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. through August 16. Participate in the trivia nights every fourth Wednesday of every month. Marina, boat and bike rentals are available. The beer garden is available for rent for those looking to host private events. Visit the Lake County Forest Preserve District website to inquire at LCFPD.org for more information. Grab a lawn chair, blankets, and snacks, and visit the gazebo in Kracklauer Park in Mundelein for a free concert every Sunday throughout the summer. The Concert in the Park Summer series features a new performance each week with the Mundelein High School Jazz Band opening for the season. It is a good opportunity to wind down the weekend and bring the family out for the evening. This series plays every Sunday through August 28.
