This weekend, many get three days off due to Memorial Day. Later this week, there will be a guide to Memorial Day celebrations in Lake County post.
Ready to have some fun outside? Let’s see what’s going on this issue of things to do this weekend May 27-30.
- Memorial Day Weekend at Six Flags is Lake County’s unofficial beginning to the summer. The highly anticipated 4-D interactive ride, JUSTICE LEAGUE: Battle of Metropolis will open and Hurricane Harbor will reopen its doors for the summer. Join the Looney Tunes themselves as the Gurnee amusement part provides 14 roller coasters, live entertainment, high-energy shows, delectable eats, thrill rides and more.
Sunday-Monday, May 28-30; Sat-Sun 10:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Mon 10:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. Six Flags Great America, I-94 and Grand Avenue, Gurnee.
- It’s Memorial Day this weekend, and Great Lakes Naval Museum is the perfect place to honor those who fought. The Naval Station Great Lakes museum will host a lecture: The Calumet Navy Yard and the Fight for Civil Rights, 1942-45. In early 1942, the U.S. Navy turned to the nation’s railroad car builder, Pullman, for 78 naval warships. In just 30 months, the shipyard’s 6,000 men and women dramatically challenged American racial segregation. Archivist Martin Tuohy will explore all of this and more in the free lecture.

- The Illinois Brass Band, winners of six North American Band Association awards, will perform a free Memorial Day weekend concert at the outdoor stage of the Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic Center on Sunday. Enjoy some great music with the family.
Sunday, May 29; 2 p.m. Cultural & Civic Center of Round Lake Beach, 2007 Civic Center Way, Round Lake Beach.
- This Memorial Day there may not be 76 trombones leading the big parade, but it will sure be an epic one. Lake Zurich’s American Legion and Downtown area together will host the area’s Annual Memorial Day Parade. The route starts at 51 Lions Dr. and proceeds to Veterans Monument at 200 Mohawk Trail where there will be a brief service held to commemorate all veterans.

- Enjoy an exciting evening of gospel music at the College of Lake County’s 32nd Annual Salute to Gospel Music program featuring Dove Award winner Brian Courtney Wilson, and Grammy® Award Nominee and Paul Porter. Porter is a founding member, lead vocalist and songwriter of The Christianaires. The CLC Gospel Choir Director Charles Thomas Hayes will also perform.
