It’s hard to believe that we’re half way through August already. As these beautiful late summer days start to fade into fall, and as the edges of the green leaves that have given us shade this summer begin to redden, now is the time to savor this weather. We all know that tomorrow can bring a record shattering heat wave, or an early frost. With such unreliable weather, it’s good to know that we can plan our weekends around events that are fun no matter what the forecast.
Experience! Afrofest & Jamaicafest is this Saturday, August 17 from 2 to 7 p.m., and Experience is the name of the game. I’m looking forward to the rhythm and dancing of live music, including hip-hop, gospel, R&B, and a drum circle. Dine on ribs, jerk chicken and Caribbean inspired cuisine. And with a traditional market, shop for jewelry and other unique imports that includes traditional clothing and wares. ( Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Road, North Chicago)
This one’s a classic. The 16th Annual Lincolnshire Art Festival is this Saturday, August 17 & Sunday August 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year, the Lincolnshire Art Festival proudly celebrates its 16th year as a tremendous fine arts institution. This Festival is currently ranked as one of the top 100 art festivals in the country by Sunshine Artist magazine and draws crowds from near and far. Live music and entertainment and art activities for kids make this festival a destination for art lovers of all ages. ( Village Green, NE Corner of Milwaukee Ave and Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire)
Take advantage of the beautiful ArtWaulk on Saturday, August 17 from 5-10 p.m. Join in this monthly ArtWauk event and experience the arts revolution in downtown Waukegan. Paintings, sculptures, film, dance, theatre, comedy, music, performance arts, great food, amazing neighborhood, pedicabs and awesome people make this a fun and inspirational event. Who knows… you just might end up enjoying a cup of coffee, and listening to music with a new friend. (Downtown Waukegan, Genesee Street, Waukegan)
Tempel Lipizzans is holding an Evening Performance on Saturday, August 17 at 6 p.m. Follow the varying stages of the development and training of the Lipizzan horses, all set to classical music. Join the story of young colts as they transform into the Dancing Stallions that Tempel Lipizzans is known for. These special performances begin with a complimentary champagne toast and are followed by a reception in the Stallion Stable courtyard with complimentary appetizers and wine and beer for purchase. (Tempel Lipizzans, 17000 Wadsworth Rd., Old Mill Creek.)
Maxwell Street moves easily among various styles: Russian and gypsy music, folk songs, theater songs and Yiddish pop songs from the 1920’s-50’s. Like the Yiddish theater of yesteryear, a performance of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band brings the optimism, pathos, irony, zest for life, and unique humor of the American Jewish immigrant to the modern stage. Enjoy their performance at Long Grove’s Free Summer Concert Series on Saturday, August, 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. Concert goers are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the air of a summer Sunday afternoon while listening to wonderful music. (Sunset Foods Pavillion, Downtown Long Grove)
