It’s that time of year where we show corny and cunning ways of how much we love our significant other. Valentine’s Day this year falls on a Sunday, so it’s nice that most of us have the day off as well.

The biographical status of St. Valentine’s Day derives from a Christian named Valentinus who was imprisoned for conducting weddings for soldiers. These soldiers were forbidden to marry.

Now we spend our time buying flowers, candies and more likely than not dinner for our loved ones. It’s also a good excuse to plan an elaborate date night that may have been shoved to the backburner because of family parties for the holidays in December.

Nevertheless, Lake County is an avid celebrator of Valentine’s Day. We wouldn’t dare break your heart, so here are the Valentine’s Day Celebrations in Lake County.

PM&L Theatre Presents Uncommon Women and Others Friday-Sunday, February 12-14; Fri & Sat 8 p.m., Sun 2:30 p.m.

This play  is a dramatic comedy by Wendy Wasserstein. Eight women
alumni of Mount Holyoke College reunite six years after their 1978 graduation to catchup on life. The play recalls memories that contain flashbacks to the 1972-73 school year as seven seniors and one freshman try to discover their true path in during the second-wave feminism.

Three Brother's Theatre Presents, 'Arsenic & Old Lace'@ Three Brother's Friday - Saturday, February 12-13; Fri & Sat 8 p.m.

The darling elderly Brewster sisters have a wonderful hobby: they help lonely old men into the afterlife by poisoning their wine. When their nephew Mortimer finds one of those old men in the window seat the fun really begins. Watch Mortimer negotiate his murderous aunts. Teddy, his brother who believes he’s President Theodore Roosevelt. And his estranged brother, a face lifted murderer on the lamb who looks like Boris Karloff. All while trying to keep his new fiancée safe. 

Mr. Benny @ the CLockwise Friday-Sunday, February 12-14; Fri & Sat 8 p.m., Sun 3 p.m.

He remembers his childhood in Waukegan, his Jewish parents and humble origin, and the beginning of his show business career at Great Lakes Naval Base. He also recounts his years playing the violin professionally in Vaudeville, his radio career and the golden age of television. Throughout Newell often steps into scenes with the voices of such luminaries as Fred Allen, George Burns, Eddie Anderson, Don Wilson, Dennis Day, and even Marilyn Monroe. The play also shares inside stories like how he got his stage name (Benny was born Benjamin Kubelsky) and what Benny really felt about his famous feud with Fred Allen.

Educating Rita @ the Citadel Friday-Sunday, February 12-14

Rita, a married hair stylist in her 20s, wants to go back to school. She begins studying with Dr. Bryant, a professor using alcohol to cope with his divorce. Despite his personal problems, Dr. Bryant helps Rita realize her academic potential. In turn, her passion for learning revitalizes his love of teaching. However, when Rita's blue-collar spouse learns that his wife is more interested in education than homemaking, he becomes frustrated.

Sister Act @ Marriott Theatre February 12-14

The Orchid Show @ Chicago Botanic Saturday-Sunday, February 13-14; 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The Orchid Show is the only one of its kind in the Chicago area. More than 12,000 brilliantly beautiful and unusual orchids from around the world will extend throughout the Regenstein Center, including lush presentations within the Greenhouses.
